Outdoor market in Warwickshire

The Wellesbourne Airfield Market in Wellesbourne, England, is one of the most well-known and largest outdoor markets in Britain, attracting both locals and visitors from the surrounding area. Held on a former airfield, this market has become a major attraction in Warwickshire, offering an impressive variety of goods and experiences. Its history dates back several decades, and despite experiencing ups and downs in recent years, it remains a vibrant meeting place for bargain hunters, families, and lovers of markets with a local flair.

Wellesbourne Airfield market stalls

The market covers a large area and consists of hundreds of stalls offering a wide range of products. From fresh food like meat, fruit, and vegetables to clothing and shoes, household items, tools, and electronics, you can find almost everything here. Particularly noteworthy is the variety of stalls offering seasonal items, such as Christmas decorations in winter or garden supplies in spring. In addition to the usual market stalls, there are also a number of food trucks and food stalls offering a selection of dishes from savory snacks like hotdogs and kebabs to sweet treats like ice cream. These culinary offerings make the market not only a place to shop, but also a place to linger and enjoy for a day.

Shopping place for local products

A special appeal of the Wellesbourne Airfield Market lies in its location on an airfield that is still partially used for aviation activities. Visitors have the opportunity to watch small planes take off and land, adding an extra dimension to the market and delighting especially children. The wide, open space of the airfield ensures that the market is spacious and does not feel overcrowded even with a high number of visitors. The hard surface ground makes walking and driving easier, making the market accessible even in bad weather, although rain can of course affect the experience somewhat.

Airfield market for families

The market is known for its bargains and the opportunity to make unique or unexpected finds. There are stalls selling second-hand goods, antiques, and handmade products, giving the market a certain charm. However, it is also often noted that many stalls offer similar items, including a considerable amount of brand imitations like clothing, shoes, or electronics. This elicits mixed opinions: while some visitors appreciate the affordable deals, others find the quality of some products questionable. Nevertheless, the market remains a paradise for those willing to invest time in searching for special offers among the stalls.

Bargains and second-hand goods

In addition to the shopping experience, the market also offers a social component. The stallholders are often friendly and willing to chat with customers or negotiate about their goods, creating a warm, communal atmosphere. There is ample parking space, including areas for people with limited mobility, increasing accessibility. However, the quality of the toilet facilities is occasionally criticized, as is the condition of the parking lot, which can be riddled with potholes. These minor flaws, however, rarely detract from the overall experience, characterized by the diversity and liveliness of the market.

The Wellesbourne Airfield Market is deeply rooted in local culture and regularly attracts thousands of visitors, especially on holidays when the crowds are even larger. It is more than just a trading place - it is an experience that blends the tradition of British markets with a touch of modernity. Its proximity to other attractions in the region, such as Stratford-upon-Avon, also makes it appealing to tourists looking to explore local life. For many, the market is a piece of nostalgia, reminding them of times when it was considered one of the largest of its kind, even if it may not have quite the same splendor as before.

Lots of bargains to be had here including fashion, electricals, food, home goods, tools etc. only issue we had is the parking as it’s extremely muddy and lots of pot holes.

Only got a 4 star due to the amount of repeat market stalls. And the food was typical market food and the prices were sky high for most of it. Is it worth a day out. Yes if you got nothing else to do. And wrap up warm on a cold day. It's an airfield.

Visited in the first open week in Feb and it was cold and rainy which spoiled the trip. The field in which you park was wet and boggy. The market stalls and traders were fine - plenty of variety of stalls selling mainly clothes but also other items such as homeware, electrical and DIY. Food vans were over priced so be aware. £23 for 2 burgers, chips and drink!
